The TOEFL iBT® exam, administered via the internet, is offered more than 50 times a year at authorized test centers around the world. The Universidad Industrial de Santander is an authorized test center.

    This agreement established the different equivalency tables for validation through the Institutional Proficiency Test administered by the UIS Language Institute and/or through international exam certifications.

    Course Waiver Process

    1. Valid Certifications

    To meet the foreign language requirement in undergraduate programs through the Certification of International Exam or Diplomas, the following equivalency table will apply.

    Once the student has obtained passing results in the exams or validation of certifications, they must begin the course waiver process at the UIS Language Institute, which can be requested by emailing:

    All certifications must be classified according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and must assess the four communication skills.

    The certification of foreign language proficiency is valid for two (2) years from the date of the exam if the certified level is Basic User A1–A2. When the certification corresponds to an Independent User B1–B2 or a Proficient User C1–C2, it will not expire.

    2. Enroll in and Pass Courses

    To complete the course waiver process, UIS undergraduate students interested in meeting the graduation requirement in a foreign language may also:

    • Enroll in and pass the courses of the Youth Program (Conversational)

    • Enroll in and pass the intensive, semi-intensive, or super-intensive courses of the extension program of the UIS Language Institute:

    3. Institutional Proficiency Exam

    The UIS Language Institute offers an institutional exam in English, French, and Portuguese to certify foreign language proficiency in the four communication skills:

    • Listening – Speaking – Reading – Writing

    This certification is valid for academic procedures within Universidad Industrial de Santander. It is only valid for two years for levels A1 and A2.

    To meet the foreign language requirement in undergraduate programs with the results of the proficiency exam administered by the UIS Language Institute, the following equivalency table will apply.

    When the result is lower than 46 points on the exam, no course waiver process will apply.

    Requirements to Take the Exam

      For example, to request a course waiver for English 2, you must have passed English 1.

      You may not take the proficiency exam for course waiver purposes to raise your grade point average if the course has already been taken or waived.

    Remote Exam:

    Before submitting your request, verify that your equipment (computer, camera, microphone, speakers, or headphones) is working properly.

    On the day of the exam:

    • Log in 30 minutes in advance to complete the registration process.

    • Have your identification document ready.

    • Follow the instructions you will receive beforehand via email.

    Course Waiver Process

    The UIS Language Institute will issue a statement to the Academic Administrative Unit responsible for the UIS graduate program, indicating compliance with and the authenticity of the International Exam Certifications submitted by applicants to a graduate program, as well as their equivalency in the Common European Framework of Reference scale.

    If you wish to take this exam for procedures at institutions other than Universidad Industrial de Santander, it is important to first verify whether the certificate issued by the UIS Language Institute is accepted.

    A student with active enrollment in a graduate program may take the Institutional Proficiency Exam in English for graduate program completion once at no cost.

    3. Course Waiver for Master’s Students

    For Master’s in Research students taking the English courses offered by the Language Institute (Graduate English I and II), grading will be quantitative, on a scale from 0.0 to 5.0.

    For Master’s in Deepening students, the evaluation will be qualitative.

    4. Course Waiver (Undergraduate to Graduate)

    UIS undergraduate students who have passed English 3, English 4, or equivalent levels at the Language Institute (A2 level – Basic User) may request a waiver for these courses to meet the admission or graduation requirement for graduate programs.

    The waiver will be granted using the original grade obtained, provided it corresponds to level A2.

    5. Course Waiver from Other Institutions

    If you have taken and passed English, French, Portuguese, or Italian courses at another national or foreign higher education institution, you may request a waiver.

    The Language Institute will evaluate the request based on the course content, its correspondence with the courses offered by UIS, and the provisions of Agreement of the Superior Council No. 037 of 2018.

    Once the student has passed the courses, received the results of the proficiency exam and/or verification of international certificates, they must write to the following email addresses requesting the course waiver form, in order to begin the process with the Admissions Office:
